I was on Reddit and Europeans came out of the woodworks to say awful things and then go "but it's not racist" and when people were like "people say the exact same thing about racial and ethnic minorities in the US" they're like "no see that would be awful about those groups, but it's true here and so I'm not racist"
Incapable of self reflection
This meme is so old that I first encountered it before high schoolers were allowed on Facebook.
Like, they literally never pause and ask how Americans learned to be racist. I’ve lost count of how many posts by Black Americans I’ve seen where they say they were treated so much better in various European countries once whichever European they were dealing with learned they were American.
Never mind that most only have social programs because they were put in place when the countries were still extremely homogenous. For all that people praise the Scandinavian countries, folks *rarely* look at their fucked up immigration policies and barriers to accessing those programs.
Speaking of immigration, even leftist and liberal Europeans are more hawkish than the median Republican.
One time, some Hungarian dude on Facebook was going on and on about Romani people and how horrible they were and how I (am American) didn't get it because I didn't live in a place with a Romani population. But everything he said was the exact same shit people here say about Black people and/or drug users, especially the "they'll steal everything" nonsense.
It really is the same bigotry about different groups, and they'll act enlightened because their racism is directed toward a small group.
